Have you heard of the BISOU method? Well, it’s nothing new—a big kiss always lifts your spirits! But the one we’re talking about today does a world of good for our precious planet. It’s the name of a technique that involves asking yourself 5 key questions to help you consume in a more thoughtful and responsible way. Reducing our environmental impact by cutting back on overconsumption? And at the same time, better managing our budget? Well, that’s a double benefit we can’t resist! Bye-bye to impulse and unnecessary purchases—we buy less and better thanks to the BISOU technique BISOU

The BISOU method BISOU making any purchase

The BISOU method is a mnemonic device designed to guide us in our choices as consumers. It is a magical acronym because each letter refers to a crucial question to ask yourself before pulling out your credit card:

  • B as in Need: What need does this purchase meet?

  • I as in Immediate: Do I need it right away?

  • S is for Similar: Do I own a similar item?

  • O as in Origin: Where does this product come from?

  • U as in Useful: Is it really useful to me?

This technique was created by Marie Duboin and Herveline Giraudeau, authors of the booksI'm stopping overconsumption! I'm stopping overconsumption! and L’abus de consommation responsable rend heureux ! (Responsible Consumption Makes You Happy!), to combat overconsumption and encourage slow

An acronym to limit impulse buying

Before giving in to the temptation of a new purchase, stop for a moment and ask yourself if it’s really necessary. The BISOU Technique, here we go! Imagine the B in the BISOU method as a caring friend whispering an essential question in your ear: “Does this product fill a void in your life, or is it just a fleeting whim?”

Let’s be honest, our culture encourages us to want everything right here and right now. That’s why it’s so hard to curb impulse buying! Fortunately, the “I” in the BISOU technique comes to the rescue with a friendly nudge: “Are you sure you need this right now?”

If you're not sure, why not hold off on the purchase for a bit? That turquoise rocket-shaped toaster might just be a passing fancy… and your wallet will thank you for it. Thanks, BISOU method, BISOU helping me manage my budget!

A technique for eco-friendly consumption

If you're not convinced, think of the letters S and U inthe acronym BISOU: "Will my new item end up gathering dust in a corner? Or will it replace a twin that got lost in the vastness of my closet?" Yes, but it's not quite the same color...

We often tend to unconsciously gravitate toward similar products—and before we know it, we’ve made unnecessary purchases! And even though we can resell them on secondhand sites, the planet already has enough problems, doesn’t it? Without necessarily becoming minimalists, perhaps we can avoid adding to the burden.

So, to top it all off, the "O" in the BISOU method encourages us to take a closer look at where items come from: "Was this product made responsibly? Did it travel thousands of miles to end up in our hands?" "Made in France" and eco-friendly products are all the rage—let’s not deprive ourselves of them…
