Drumroll, please: here are the world’s greatest puzzle records!

The World’s Largest Jigsaw Puzzle

In 2011, the record for the world's largest jigsaw puzzle in terms of number of pieces was set in Vietnam. This giant puzzle, consisting of 551,232 pieces, was assembled by 1,600 students from Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics. It took no less than 17 hours of intense concentration to reveal a six-petaled lotus flower on a surface measuring 14.85 x 23.20 meters. But this record only concerns the number of pieces. The world's largest puzzle in terms of surface area was made in Dubai in 2018: it has only 13,320 pieces, but covers an area of more than 6,122 m².

Mini Puzzles with Fewer Than 100 Pieces

Far from being the world's largest puzzle, the mini puzzles offer a whole different kind of challenge and are much more practical if you don’t have a stadium! These fascinating miniatures are ideal for those who love precision and attention to detail. The smallest ones are made by Selegiochi: they have 99 pieces that, once assembled, take up less space than a smartphone. Perfect for enthusiasts who want to take their hobby with them wherever they go!

Big puzzles that challenge us

Looking for a challenge? The French brand Grafika invites you to journey through the world of art with “Travel around Art” and its 54,000 pieces, delivered in an actual travel suitcase! In 2024, German artist Hans-Josef Schaadt managed to complete this giant puzzle in just 99 days. But if you want to take on the world’s largest puzzle available for purchase, try your hand at the 60,000-piece “What a Wonderful World” by artist Éric Dowdle. Don’t worry—it’s divided into 60 sections of 1,000 pieces each!

The Most Difficult Puzzle in the World

An impossible puzzle? Created in 2007 by British mathematician Christopher Monckton, Eternity II is considered the hardest puzzle in the world. It isn’t the largest, but it’s such a complicated brain teaser that a prize of 2 million pounds was offered to anyone who could solve it! Its 256 square pieces do not fit together like in a traditional puzzle: they are placed on a grid by matching their edges. This puzzle remains the most difficult in the world: it is estimated to have nearly 20,000 solutions, although none has been found so far!

Monochrome Puzzles: The Ultimate Test of Patience

Monochrome puzzles require patience, patience, and… patience! Whether it’s“White Heaven” or “Black Hell,” they’re a real challenge! But still easier than the unusual “The Accident” puzzle , with its 215 pieces cut from clear acrylic—all in different shapes! Think a color gradient would be easier? That’s because you haven’t tried Clemens Habicht’s“1,000 Colors” yet, where each piece a unique color among the other 999!

The World’s Most Expensive Puzzle

The record for the world's most expensive jigsaw puzzle was set in 2005 at an auction benefiting the non-profit Golden Retriever Foundation, for the impressive sum of $27,000. The 467-piece wooden work was handcrafted by American artist Rachel Page Elliott, who has won numerous awards for her skills. The name of the buyer has never been made public...

World Speed Records for Puzzles

The world champion in speedcubing is a 26-year-old Spaniard, Alejandro Clemente León, who has won multiple international titles. But speed records just keep falling: in 2025, the Polish Wiktor Kacprzak solved a 500-piece puzzle in just 22 minutes and 2 seconds at the world’s largest competition. That’s equivalent to fitting a piece 2.5 seconds!

As forthe speed record for a 1,000-piece puzzle, it is held by Sarah Mills of the United Kingdom, who completed it in 1 hour and 40 minutes at the 2020 British Championship. If you’re a puzzle enthusiast (or just confident!) and the idea of smashing that record appeals to you, go for it and put together the London Callingpuzzle!
